Start All Over Again

A man of character finds a special attractiveness in difficulty, since it is only by coming to grips with difficulty that he can realize his potential.

— Charles de Gaulle

Nothing’s impossible I have found,
For when my chin is on the ground,
I pick myself up. Dust myself off. Start all over again.
Don’t lose your confidence if you slip,
Be grateful for a pleasant trip,
And pick yourself up. Dust yourself off. Start all over again.

Work like a soul inspired,
Till the battle of the day is won.
You may be sick and tired,
But you’ll be a man, my son!
Will you remember the famous men,
Who had to fall to rise again?
So take a deep breath. Pick yourself up. Dust yourself off. Start all over again.

I’ll get some self-assurance,
If your endurance is great.
I’ll learn by easy stages,
If you’re courageous and wait.
To feel the strength I want to,
I must hang on to Your hand,
Maybe by the time I’m fifty,
I’ll get up and do a nifty.
Nothing’s impossible I have found,
For when my chin is on the ground,
I pick myself up. Dust myself off. Start all over again.

— Jerome Kern

When it comes to yielding absolutely everything—every part big or little—when asking Him, the Lord compared it for me to an athlete who, regardless of age or ability, must keep training and honing his abilities, or a writer who must keep cultivating style and expression. If not, the writer, the athlete, or whoever, will fade away with only the thin blanket of past victories to comfort him. It’s the same for anything and everything. If you don’t keep at it, you’ll lose it. There’s literally nothing that anyone’s been given or has worked for that will continue on its own without repeated cultivation.

When a man sits with a pretty girl for an hour, it seems like a minute. But let him sit on a hot stove for a minute—and it’s longer than any hour. That’s relativity. — Alfred Einstein (explaining relativity) In the Baroque period (c. 1600 – 1750) the liturgy used to include what was called…

  • Add to Your Faith

Add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. For if these things be in you and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. — 2 Peter 1:5-7 Faith…

  • Adversity

Adversity is a severe instructor, set over us by the One who knows us better than we do ourselves, as He loves us better, too. He that wrestles with us strengthens our nerves and sharpens our skill. Our antagonist is our helper. This conflict with difficulty makes us acquainted with our object, and compels us…

  • Always in My Hands

Every situation that concerns you is in My hands, because you have placed them there. Leave them there—don’t pick them up again and try to carry them yourself. Trust that I will take care of any burden or situation that you entrust to My care.
