Thanks, Dina. Interesting. I think in my own spiritual life I've had a tendency to see Jesus more as "God is love" while downplaying other parts of His nature. Not that I ignore Jesus casting the moneychangers out of the temple, or blasting the Pharisees in Matthew 23, or talking about judgment ("It will be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city"). But remembering that it's also in His nature to hate sin (while loving sinners) is something that I need to do more--while avoiding judgmentalism. So it's thought-provoking. As is the part about icons. I never realized that about that particular picture. I just sort of thought of it as "wimpy Jesus" without looking at it very closely. The Medieval style of art doesn't carry over very well today, and that hides its deeper meaning.
